Is Live Kidney Transplantation Risky?

If kidneys lose their ability to function, the condition is known as kidney failure. Generally, kidney failure is treated either by peritoneal dialysis or in serious cases, one needs to go through a kidney transplant. Kidney donation is the most common type of living organ donation. Till date, among all other transplantation, kidney transplantation is the most successful medical procedure.

kidney transplantation chennai

Living donor kidney transplants are actually the best option for patients who have kidney failure. Here are some of the reasons:
  • First of all the surgery can be planned according to convince of both the donor and the recipient.
  • For live kidney transplantation, the recipient won’t have to wait in the transplant waiting list.
  • Chances of risks and rejections are pretty less.
  • Recipients are going to have long term benefit.
  • Both the donor and the recipient can get back to normal life within a short period of time.

What are the possible risks?

As you can see, live kidney transplantation has a lot of benefits. Yet there are some possible risks. The most possible risk of transplant is that the body might reject the donor's kidney. But the actual fact is, about 90% of the recipients who have received the kidney from a living donor have lived for years. So live kidney transplant is quite on the positive side.

Well, if you feel some sort of unusual soreness at the site of the incision or if your urine amount has changed post-transplantation, then you have to consult your doctor. It means your body is rejecting the new kidney and you will have to resume the dialysis and go back for another procedure.

But as told earlier, 90% of people who have gone through live kidney transplantation have got good results. So the risk percentage is quite less.

For kidney transplantation, you need to get treated from an authorized and renowned hospital. The South India Institute for Urology and Transplant (SIIUT) @SIMS Hospital is by far the best Urology Hospital in Chennai. Our doctors and medical experts know what's best for you. In fact, the hospital offers the best kidney transplantation procedure in Chennai.

What Can Be Done About an Enlarged Prostate?

The first sign of an enlarged prostate for most men is the nightly bathroom runs. It is known by several names - benign prostate hyperplasia, enlarged prostate, or simply BPH.

Deciding on Treatment for an Enlarged Prostate

For an enlarged prostate, a range of treatments is available – surgery, minimally-invasive office procedures, and medications.

The treatment is based on your age, size of your prostate gland, and your overall health.

Minimally Invasive Treatments for an Enlarged Prostate

Several procedures can relieve symptoms when medications are not working. To shrink a portion of the prostate various types of heat energy are used.

TUMT (transurethral microwave thermotherapy): For mild to moderate blockage this therapy is effective.

TUNA (transurethral radiofrequency needle ablation): To relieve symptoms and improve urine flow this procedure destroys prostate tissue.

Prostatic stents: To widen the urethra and keep it open a tiny metal coil called a stent is inserted in some cases.

Surgery for an Enlarged Prostate

Surgery can relieve symptoms for most men with very enlarged prostates. Your doctor will recommend which is best for you after a careful evaluation of your general medical condition, and situation.

TURP (transurethral resection of the prostate): For an enlarged prostate this is the most common surgery, and symptoms are reduced considerably.

TUIP (transurethral incision of the prostate): Instead of removing prostate tissue this procedure involves making cuts in the prostate. After the procedure patients can go home the same day.

Laser Surgery: To destroy prostate tissue this procedure uses high energy vaporizing laser. It may require an overnight stay at the hospital as it is done under general anesthesia.

Open Prostate Surgery (Prostatectomy): Open surgery is done when it is difficult to do a transurethral procedure. When there is bladder damage, open prostatectomy is recommended.

Be “Water Wise” for Healthy Kidneys

We all know that drinking sufficient water is vital to stay hydrated. Proper hydration is very important for the kidneys to function efficiently. The role of water in the human body mimics its role in nature, with its primary offerings being transportation, cleaning, and conduction. Water carries nutrients to cells, flushes our bodies of wastes, and aids digestion by forming stomach secretions. It also keeps our moisture-rich organs (skin, muscles, eyes, and nose) function well, it regulates our body temperature and metabolism while it lubricates, cushions our joints, just to name a few of its many functions.

Have you ever thought about your Kidneys ?

Many of us have a wireless router located on a shelf, somewhere in their home. If you have one in your home, you don’t know precisely how the router works or what all those blinking lights mean, but you are glad it works – most of the time, you only take its nonstop, indefatigable function for granted. You know what else falls into that class? Your kidneys. It’s understandable if you don’t know what they do exactly, but at least you should acknowledge they’re important. The kidneys are in charge of many important processes that take place endlessly in your body to keep you alive. The vital processes include the regulation of water balance, the excretion of waste and acid-base balance. They regulate the levels of salt, potassium, and acid in your body as well as filter your blood to remove waste products and excess fluid. The kidneys filter about 113 to 144 liters of blood to create 0.94 to 1.8 liters of urine every day. To put it simply, every 30 minutes your kidneys filter all the blood in your body eliminating waste and excess fluid. Pretty amazing isn’t it. Your kidneys also produce hormones that regulate your blood pressure, control the production of red blood cells and promote bone health. When you are appropriately hydrated, it keeps your blood vessels in good condition so oxygen and nutrients can pass through freely to the organs that need them, including your kidneys.

kidney stone treatment chennai

Almost 10% of the world population is affected by chronic kidney disease (CKD), and every year millions die as they do not have access to affordable treatment. According to a recent study conducted by Harvard Medical School in partnership with 13 medical canters all over India, 15% of Indians have some form of chronic kidney disease and one-third of the above people have advanced stages of the disease.  The most startling fact is that the majority of kidney failure patients in India are much younger and affects predominantly the working population.

Forget Detox juice, the best liquid your kidney really needs is a nice, big glass of H2O.

Consumption of more water is a simple way to reduce the chances of kidney diseases . Most of us find this task exceptionally hard, so start out slowly and listen to your body. A common "rule" often considered when it comes to water consumption is to drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water each day. According to the National Kidney Foundation, individuals who excrete 2 - 2.5 liters of urine are 50 percent less likely to form kidney stones. That urine volume is related with drinking about eight to ten 8-ounce glasses of water a day.  However this number varies depending on age, activity level and how much water people,  are consuming in other drinks like coffee, tea, or water-rich fruit and veggies.

Water is always the first line of treatment for Kidney stones. When you are exercising strenuously or when the weather is warmer, you might need to drink more than your normal intake of water as you lose a lot of fluids when you are sweating. When ever you are drinking less water, kidney will conserve more water and secrete a concentrated urine. So by common sense if your urine is high coloured, means your water consumption is inadequate. Thus when ever you void urine, it should be water like, colour less. So whenever you see a high colour urine simply increase your water intake.

Keep your kidneys healthy by being “water-wise”, which means drinking the right amount of water and other healthy fluids.  Take care of your kidneys, and they will take good care of you. They are amazing organs....!!!

Now you’re prepared, with some practical knowledge to give your kidneys a break.

PERCUTANEOUS NEPHROLITHOTOMY is one of the important methods of treatments that we undertake for removing kidney stones that are quite large(>2cm diameter). Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) is used for the circumstances when the stones are large in size and number, scattered over a large surface area.

PCNL PROCEDURE

After the patient had been prepared for the surgery after anaesthesia, a 1cm incision is made on the kidney so as to pass the tube into the kidney to perform the stone removal. X-Ray imaging is used to assist the entry of the tube.

The procedure is minimally invasive which can be done by a keyhole surgery which radically decreases the chances of causing infections after the surgery. It also decreases the recovery time needed.
